Ship Inspections for Cruise Agents

How to turn a few hours on board into knowledge you can sell with.

A ship inspection is a guided tour of a cruise ship, usually in port on turnaround day, arranged for travel advisors. It is one of the oldest forms of cruise agent training and still one of the most useful.

What to Look at on a Ship Inspection

SpaceQuestions to answer for your clients
Cabins in several categoriesHow big does each category feel? Where is storage? How do balcony and ocean-view cabins differ in daily use?
Connecting and family cabinsWhich categories connect? How do families of four or five fit?
Accessible cabins and routesDoor widths, bathroom layout, and the route from cabin to dining and pool decks
Dining venuesWhich are included, which cost extra, and how busy do they feel?
Kids and teen areasAges served and how close they are to family cabins
Quiet spacesWhere a couple or solo traveler can escape the crowd
Embarkation flowWhere guests board, where the first lunch is, how lifts and stairs connect

Turning an Inspection Into Sales Knowledge

  • Photograph cabin layouts and views, with the cabin number noted, so you can match photos to deck plans later.
  • Write up your notes the same day while details are fresh.
  • Note who each space suits: families, couples, groups, travelers with limited mobility.
  • Keep your inspection record (date, ship, organiser): CLIA certification counts inspections at every level.

After the Inspection

Within a week, turn your notes into something clients can use: a short email to past guests who would suit the ship, a few photos with honest captions, or a one-page summary you can send when the ship comes up in a quote. The inspection is only half finished until the knowledge reaches a client.

Ship Inspection Etiquette

  • Bring the identification the organiser asks for, and arrive on time: port security schedules are strict.
  • Stay with your guide. Cabins on turnaround day are being prepared for new guests.
  • Ask before photographing crew or guests, and keep photos to spaces and cabins.
  • Thank the line’s representative afterwards, and tell them which clients you have in mind for the ship.

Inspections pair naturally with deck-plan study on Cruise Ship Deck Plans. For training that happens at sea rather than in port — seminars at sea and familiarization sailings — see Sell and Sail.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do virtual ship inspections count?

For CLIA certification, CLIA accepts live ship inspections or virtual inspections that CLIA itself provides, on CLIA member cruise lines. Other virtual tours are still useful study, but check whether they count before relying on them.

How do agents get invited to a ship inspection?

Usually through a cruise line’s sales team, a host agency, a consortium or an industry event when a ship is in port. Lines set their own rules on who may attend and what identification to bring.
