Start Selling CruisesCruise Travel Agent Training FAQ
How long does cruise travel agent training take?
There is no single answer, because training is ongoing. CLIA gives candidates 18 months to complete its Certified Cruise Counsellor level and two years for each higher counsellor level. Individual cruise-line modules are usually short enough to finish in an evening.
What does cruise travel agent certification cost?
It depends on the program. Most cruise-line programs are offered to agents at no charge. CLIA charges for membership and certification enrollment and notes that courses, certificate programs, ship inspections and cruises are separate costs. Check current fees directly with each provider.
Is CLIA certification worth it?
For advisors who want to specialise in cruises, it is the recognised industry designation and its requirements build real experience. For someone selling occasional cruises alongside other travel, a few cruise-line programs may be enough.
Can I take cruise-line training before I join a host agency?
Some public material is open to anyone, but most cruise-line training portals ask for agency booking credentials when you register. Many new sellers join a host agency first for that reason.
Do I need a license to sell cruises?
There is no national license in the U.S., but some states have seller-of-travel registration rules, and your host agency may have requirements of its own. Ask your host how they apply to you before you start.
Should I specialise in one cruise line?
Many successful cruise sellers know two or three lines deeply and the rest well enough to recognise when a client fits elsewhere. Specialising too narrowly can leave you unable to serve clients whose needs change.
Are river cruises part of cruise travel agent training?
They can be. River cruising is a different product, with smaller ships and different inclusions, and CLIA offers a RiverView certificate program for it. Many river lines also run their own advisor training.
Will training guarantee that I earn money?
No. Training improves your knowledge and credibility; results depend on your effort, your market and your business setup. Be wary of anyone who promises income.
Still Deciding Whether to Start?
Try one free cruise-line module this week and notice whether you enjoy it. If you find yourself wanting to know more about cabins, ports and how to match people to ships, cruise selling may suit you. If it feels like a chore, that is useful to know before you invest more time.
